- A unique crossover between Converse shoes and Transformers have released in South Africa.
- Four different pairs of shoes are now available.
- These shoes range in price from R1 200 to R2 000.
Transformers fans and sneakerheads both have something to celebrate today as a corssover between the Transformers and Converse has landed in South Africa.
The South African Converse website now lists four pairs of shoes available here. From least to most expensive, these are:
- Converse x Transformers Chuck Taylor All Star Star Easy-On | R1 199.95
- Converse x Transformers Chuck Taylor All Star Star Easy-On | R1 399.95
- Converse x Transformers Chuck Taylor All Star Decepticons | R1 799.95
- Converse x Transformers Chuck Taylor All Star Autobots | R1 999.95
Looking at the offering and we like that you can choose how overt the Transformers branding is. The All Star Decepticons shoes, for example, are done in a great grey with only subtle hints of Transformers iconography across it. We do love the little Energon Mace rubber “hangtag” included with it, even though we’d probably use that as a keychain over a shoe accessory.
We made an Energon Mace ourselves a while back, albeit in LEGO.
The most visually striking of the four shoes is the All Star Autobots which is much brighter in colour with a two tone red / blue grid pattern that is distinctively 80s. There’s a large image of Optimus Prime on the outsides of the shoes and his Energon Axe is also represented as a hangtag.
The All Star Star Easy-On is based on Bumblebee with a mostly black colour scheme broken up by yellow, and Bumblebee featured on the front and back of the shoes.
Lastly the Taylor All Star Star Easy-On is black with a white grid and again features Optimus Prime, albeit to a lesser degree.
While we’re always happy to see crossovers like this sold locally, we’re a bit disappointed at the fact that so little is available. If we head on over to the American Converse site, for example, we will see that there are more than a dozen pairs of shoes available (plus customisation options for some, also not available in South Africa). The shoes are also joined by two T-shirts, two hoodies, one sweatshirt and a backpack.
For local fans to receive a fraction of this selection is a real shame, but at least we get something from the crossover that won’t involve any private importing.
In truth South African Transformers fans are used to this shabby treatment. As we covered in a recent article around Burger King freebies (see that article below), we mentioned how no new Transformers toys had been released in the country for more than a year now and nothing has changed since that publication.
The only time new Transformers items are arriving these days is through crossovers with Burger King, today’s release of Converse, and toys made by other companies like LEGO.
We really have to ask where Hasbro South Africa is in this equation, and why kids and collectors are still stuck with shelfwarming toys from the Rise of the Beasts movie which came out so long ago.
